The Romans - traces the history of the Roman Empire with players mounting challenges to key cities and locations by using their Senators to struggle for power in Rome and their generals to combat the unwavering Barbarian onslaught towards the capital. The game is played over five eras and each era generates influence and hardships, Senators provide varying levels of influence in all areas and aligning yourself correctly can provide you with great additional strengths. By placing your generals on your own version of the board you attempt to control key locations by battling with a unique dice rolling mechanic that you can build up manipulations for. The victor is the person who has developed the most influence on the board according to their secret objective card.

We really enjoyed playing the third and sadly, final Quantum game from the Ragnar Bros and found it to be very thematic and highly engaging with plenty happening and not a great deal of player downtime. The setup is detailed as there are many components and starting cards to choose from, providing plenty of replayability, but the reward is a well balanced game. Each player uses their own variation of the same board which, not only further increases the replayability, but also provides an intriguing playing experience. This is enhanced further by the single, communal dice rolling mechanic, wooden pieces and material playmat included. We found this game to be an excellent blend of area control and worker placement. The Romans is a great game for those who enjoy their history and/or like to settle in for a good few hours of solid, mid-depth, enjoyable game play, which most definitely includes the solo version as well.
